Raymond L. Norris Raymond Lester Norris, 78, Naples Florida, passed away on Monday, July 28,2014 at AVOW Hospice in Naples after living at home many years with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Ray was born September 21, 1935 in Terre Haute, Indiana to Mary Caldwell Norris and Lester Norris. He graduated Garfield High School in 1954. On September 9, 1956 he married his high school sweetheart, Harlean Maxwell. A veteran of the United States Army, he served from February 1958 through February 1960 and remained in the Army Reserves until 1967. Ray graduated from the University of Virginia School of Banking in 1969. Ray was employed by Terre Haute First National Bank, where he was Vice President of Commercial Loans until his retirement after 43 years in 1998. Ray officiated Indiana and Illinois High School football, basketball and baseball, as a member of the Wabash Valley Officials Association for 38 years, where he served as president of that organization for many years. Ray was the Charter President of the Gateway Football Officials’ Association, also known as the Missouri Valley Football Officials’ Association. Ray served as the Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge #86 in Terre Haute 1981-82. He also served in many community positions including the boards of the Red Cross and Terre Haute Country Club. Upon his retirement Ray moved to Naples, Florida where he pursued his passion for golf. He fulfilled a dream of working in the golf industry by becoming a Ranger at Stoneybrook Golf Course in Estero and Arrowhead Golf Course in Naples. During this time, he was able to achieve the ever elusive “Hole-in- One”. Ray is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Harlean of Naples, Florida, one daughter, Jayme Norris, a son-in-law, Thomas Dennis, and two grand-dogs Sultan & David all of Rathsweiler, Germany, his brotherin- law, Ralph, sister-in-law, Geraldine, and niece, Natalie Dunkin of Plainfield, Indiana, one sister, Betty Harbuerger of Terre Haute and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother Robert Norris. A Memorial Service conducted by B.P.O Elks Lodge #86 will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N. 13th Street, Terre Haute, IN. The family suggests for those who desire, contributions be made to the AVOW Hospice, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL34105 in Ray’s Memory. Described by many as “A perfect gentleman”, Ray will be remembered as a kind, hard-working, thoughtful, well respected member of his communities who lived life well and gave much to others. Ray and his family are extremely appreciative of all those who offered support, friendship, and assistance throughout his life and most especially in the final months.
