Oct 26, 1924 – May 6, 2017 Maude Imogene (Corn) Hasten was born on Oct. 26, 1924, in Pike County, near the rural southern Indiana town of Coe. Her father was Robert Floyd Corn, a part-time farmer and a full-time coal miner loading rail cars destined for furnaces in the big cities. Her mother was Stella (Fleener) Corn, full-time domestic engineer. Together, they raised Maude and her four brothers and four sisters not far from family and friends as was typical of that generation. Necessity required moving several times as she grew up. There were various homes near Oakland City and a trip to Arizona for a year. Her family was living near Spurgeon, Ind., when she graduated high school in 1942. Maude would tell you that she was not an eager student and upon graduation decided to travel to the metropolis of Evansville to make her way in the world. The world was at war, and Evansville was a site for the building of ships. There she worked as a waitress in a restaurant and met George who welded landing craft together. George Adam Hasten hailed from Marshall, Ill. Hunger brought him to that restaurant, but Maude soon garnered his interest. On Feb. 5, 1943, the two were married in the courthouse at Marshall. It was a simple beginning to a marriage that lasted over 70 years. But a war was on, so George enlisted in the Navy making Maude one of the many wives who traveled to be with a military husband or waited for a welcomed letter from abroad. When the war ended, Maude and George first settled in Peoria, Ill., where George worked in a factory. In 1949, they moved to Oakland City, Ind., where he tried his hand at farming. There they suffered through their first child, Lucinda Sue, dying at birth. Then they settled in Marshall. There George used his welding skills to provide for the family while Maude became a waitress again and also worked as a clerk at the dime store. In 1952, their first son, John Leonard, was born. In that year, they finally had a house to call their very own when they moved to 1102 Ash Street. This was to be their home for 24 years. A second son, Jerald Dean, was added to the family in 1953. Until the late 1960s, Maude was a stay-at-home mother. The Ash Street house was open to the boy's friends, pet cats, and a Cub Scout Den. When the boys became more self-reliant, Maude began to work at the Burnsides Nursing Home, a job that lasted for nearly 20 years. In 1976, Maude and George made one more move. It was to the three acres just outside of town where George had grown up; it became her home for the next 40 years. Maude once said that her fifth decade of life was her favorite. Her children were raised; there were grandchildren to play with; and they traveled. John and his wife Janet (Clapp) provided two granddaughters, Holly Diane and Heather Suzanne. Adam Michael and Audrey Marie were born to Jerry and his wife Kathy (Koutsoumpas). George's ship reunions drew them to various parts of the country. Trips to Disney World were special with a grandchild on each hand. Great-grandchildren added a spark to her later years. A special memory is when they came to her home for her to supervise making grape jelly. Maude and George joined the Clarksville Baptist Church in 1986. They were mainstays in the pew behind Janet and John. It was there where they witnessed the opening of the new church building. In the fellowship hall, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in February 2013. In the sanctuary, George's funeral was held later the same year. It is there that her body will remain until her burial in the Marshall Cemetery. She has already made her last move, one to her heavenly home for another anniversary with George. Maude was preceded in death by her husband, George; infant daughter, Lucinda Sue Hasten; her parents; brothers, Clarence Corn, Eugene Corn, and Jack Corn; sisters, Virginia Davis, LeEtta Beauchamp, and Thelma Spinn; and infant grandson, Cory William Hasten. She is survived by her sister, Norma Carrier of Evansville, Ind.; a brother, Richard Corn of St. Joseph, Ill.; sons, John (Janet) of Marshall and Jerry (Kathy) of Kingwood, Texas; four grandchildren, Holly Diane Jarovsky (David) of Lake in the Hills, Ill., Heather Suzanne Swan (Bryan) of Terre Haute, Ind., Adam Michael Hasten (Melissa) of Fishers, Ind., and Audrey Marie Sleyko (Josh) of Porter, Texas; and three great-grandchildren, Abigail Marie Jarovsky, Katherine Ann Jarovsky, and Charlotte Evelyn Swan. She also is survived by a loving church family that made her feel God's love each Sunday morning. Visitation will be at Clarksville Baptist Church on Thursday, May 11, 2017, between 4 and 7 p.m. CDT. Funeral services will be at the church on Friday, May 12, 2017, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Marshall Cemetery, west of Marshall.
