Shirley Maxine Sears McCartney, 93, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 9, 2017, at Union Hospital. She was born on June 28, 1923, in Blocher, the ninth of 10 children born to Hugh and Birdie (Gobin) McCartney. Shirley grew up in Blocher and attended school in a one room schoolhouse. She was the champion speller of Scott County. She began working at the age of 14 as a live-in-babysitter in Louisville, Ky. She met and married Chuck Sears and started a family. Shirley was an excellent mother to her three children. She devoted her life to taking care of her family and keeping their home. Being a mother and homemaker was Shirley's passion and a great source of pride. She was member of Eighth Avenue Baptist Church for over 50 years. She was active in the church and enjoyed singing in the choir. Shirley will always be remembered for her kindness and compassion, her desire to put her family first, her faith in God, and her feisty, independent nature. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Jane Ann Totten and husband Steve of Seelyville; grandchildren, Daniel Sears, Kevin Sears, Chucky Sears, Tracy Webb, Brad Sears, Brian Sears, Kim Sears, Matt Totten, and Amanda Totten; great-grandchildren, Briana Sears, Dylan Sears, Daniel Johnson, Jennifer Sears, Cameron Sears, Eric Sears, Kevin Sears, Logan Sears, Edward Sears, Jeremy Sears, Khara Totten, Rylee Totten, Alexa Totten, Lyla Totten, and Jase Totten; several great-great-grandchildren; an honorary daughter and beloved hairdresser, Linda Sauer; dear friend and companion, Frank Grizzel; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Danny Sears and Jack Sears; all of her siblings, Pat, Wilbur, Leslie, Jesse, Annis, Norma, Bessie, Edith, and Gladys; her best friend, Virginia Scott; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Shirley's family would like to thank Union Hospital, Heart to Heart Hospice, and Dr. Mardini and his staff for their compassionate care and for treating Shirley like family. Visitation will be from 1 until 2 p.m. Thursday, April 13, 2017, at Roselawn Funeral Home. A funeral ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home, with Pastor Dick Smith officiating. Shirley will be laid to rest in Roselawn Memorial Park. Shirley was always casual, yet classy and always well put together. Blue jeans were her favorite and she always wore them. Friends and family are invited to wear blue jeans to the services in honor of Shirley. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart to Heart Hospice.
