FARMERSBURG [mdash] Ronald Keith Shanks, 76, of Farmersburg, died Saturday, April 8, 2017, surrounded by loved ones, of complications due to Huntington's disease. He was born Sept. 5, 1940, in New Goshen, to Bertha Reynolds Shanks and Theodore Norval Shanks. Ronald is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara Tingley and husband Tony of Terre Haute and Karen Massengale and husband Billy of Dillon, S.C.; five grandchildren, Billy and John Carnell of Terre Haute, Drew, Reagan and Rayleigh Massengale of Dillon; one great-grandson, Aiden Carnell; and his long-time girlfriend, Phyllis Greene of Farmersburg, who cared for him for many years during his illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norval and Bertha Shanks; and two brothers, Gene Shanks and Bob Shanks. Ronald worked for over 45 years at Wabash Fiber Box in Terre Haute. He was a NASCAR fan and enjoyed camping, maintaining his family farm and tinkering with vehicles. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Ronald was a loving and devoted father who will be greatly missed. He suffered many years from Huntington's disease, which robbed him of his ability to enjoy things he wished to do in retirement, including gardening, travel, and spending time with his grandchildren. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 12, 2017, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in DeBaun Springhill Chapel with funeral services at 1 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Rick Swan officiating. Burial will be in Dugger Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests the memorial donations be made to Huntington's Disease Society of America, 505 Eighth Ave., Suite 902, New York, NY 10018.
