Essie Kirby

Essie Marie Kirby, 81, of Terre Haute, passed away Saturday March 19, 2016 in Terre Haute Regional Hospital surrounded by her family. Essie was born in Terre Haute on September 5, 1934 to William Shaffer and Pearl Halters Shaffer. Essie was retired from Terre Haute North High School where she worked in the cafeteria. Essie “Mom” was loved by all who came in contact with her, she always took the underdogs side in any disagreement no matter what. She always had a strong opinion but would listen to you. She loved garage sales in her earlier years and was always looking for a bargain to help the family out. She loved bowling and was very competitive, she was very good at the game and pushed others to be as well. After she became weaker and could not do it anymore, she always went up the bowling alley to cheer her friends to win. Later in live, she turned to the art of Bingo and sometimes played 12 cards at a time and even helped other during the game, he knack of retaining information, especially numbers was uncanny. She enjoyed eating out, especially at MCL Cafeteria. She herself was known as a great cook by her family and friends. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and never met a stranger and was an animal lover. Essie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Hershel E. Kirby who died in July of 2003. She was also preceded in death by her son, Edward H. Kirby and brothers; Forest Shaffer and Merle Shaffer. She was also preceded by four sisters; Beaulah Huddleson and Delphena Dawn Shaffer, Dorothy Shaffer and Helen Shaffer as well as a granddaughter Stacy Sullivan and a great granddaughter Kelcey Sullivan and two son’s in-laws; Larry Peters and Mickey E. Walden. She is survived by four daughters; D. Jean Peters of Terre Haute, Sharon Lee Walden of West Terre Haute, Cindy Kelley and her husband Herb of Terre Haute and Shelia Westra and James Westra of Terre Haute. She is survived by one sister, Anna Mae Mills of Terre Haute, twelve grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services are Thursday March 24th at 2:00 p.m. at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street, Terre Haute, IN., 47804. Visitation will be on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until service time. Pastor Doug Davis will be officiating, burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the Terre Haute Humane Society.
