Philip ‘Gene’ Elliott, 84, of Terre Haute passed away April 29, 2015. He was born July 6, 1930. Gene was a successful service station owner beginning with Elliott Shell then establishing Eastgate Rental, a U-Haul franchise. For 20 years he was a supervisor for Williams and Associates. After retiring he and his wife traveled extensively, primarily snowbirds to Texas. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, fishing, camping, and taking his grandchildren for buggy rides. He was a co-founder of the Antique Buggy Association and also was a co-founder of the Gasoline Station Owners Association. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War and originally belonged to Prairie Creek American Legion Post 404 and later to Wayne Newton American Legion Post 346 and VFW Post 972. He was a former Vice Commander for Southern Indiana District 6. Gene was preceded by his wife Irene Kodrich Elliott, a son Rodney J. Elliott, his parents Herman and Ivah (Watson) Elliott, his twin sister Janette Harrah and her husband Fred; another sister Freida Welch, and three brothers Bill Elliott and his wife Martha, Richard Elliott and Donald Elliott and his wife Wanda. His survivors include a son Bruce A. Elliott and wife Brenda of Brazil, two daughters A. Sue Modesitt and her husband Tom of Brazil, and Gina Layer and husband Mark of Terre Haute; grandchildren April, Stephanie, Jake, Leslie, Kamee, Dan, Nate and Jamie; great-grandchildren Taylor, Allison, Connor, Adrienne, Addy, Leah, Jace, Hannah, Adam, Andrew, and Dakota; one great-great-grandson Gannon; a sister-in-law Charlotte Elliott and a brother-in-law Bill Welch. There are several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Jacob Layer, Daniel Modesitt, Nathan Layer, Michael Cloutier, Scott Nicoson, Shaun McGrew, Darrin Silvers, and Ronald Cooper. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel with Rev. Rod Maris officiating with visitation from 11 a.m. until services. Burial will be in Prairie Creek West Lawn Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Honor Guard from Scott AFB. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
