Muench, George

George H. Muench, 92, passed away, peacefully, on July 1, 2014 at Springhill Village in Terre Haute, IN. He had resided at Sycamore Manor for the last several years. He was a lifelong resident of Terre Haute. He graduated from Indiana State Laboratory School in 1940. George worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad/ Penn Central/ Conrail from 1941 to 1986 as a locomotive engineer operating both freight and passenger trains out of Terre Haute and Indianapolis. His railroad career was interrupted by World War II when he served his country from 1942 to 1946 in Europe with the US Army Engineers. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with 2 bronze stars, the good conduct medal and the Victory Medal WW2, Infantry Rifleman CO Company E 376M INF Reg. 94th Division. George was preceded in death by his parents George (1880-1925) and Lou Muench (Hicks) (1887-1974) and all his siblings; Maxwell (1906-1996), Kathryn Wright (1908-1949), Helen McGuirk Raab (1910-2000), Walter (Tim) (1912-2000), Eugene (1920-2007). He was also preceded in death by nephew John Muench (1943-2013). He is survived by six nephews, George (Ron) Muench, Max Muench, Mike McGuirk, Joe McGuirk, George Wright, Tim Muench and three nieces, Jean Wright (Miller), Nancy Muench (Fossmeyer), Judy Muench (Mitchell). At his request, there will be no visitation.  There will be a graveside service at Highland Lawn Cemetery (Section 15) on Sunday, August 3, 2014 at 12:00pm for family and friends.  After the service there will be a luncheon gathering at MCL Cafeteria to celebrate Uncle George’s life. The family would like to thank George’s Sycamore Manor friends and staff for their years of kindness to him and the staff at Springhill Village for their care in his final days. Also, appreciation to Hospice VNA of the Wabash Valley for their care with special appreciation to Diedre Dillon, R.N. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Wabash Valley 400 8th Ave, Terre Haute, IN in his memory.
