Reverend Peter Lafko of McCordsville and formerly of Terre Haute went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 11, 2014, surrounded by his family. Peter was born February 10, 1916 in West Virginia to Ukrainian parents Paul and Pearl Lafko. He was raised in the small coal mining town of Helvetia, PA where he met and married Willet (Larsen) Lafko, his wife of 72 years. After graduating from Luthersburg High School, he worked as a coal miner alongside his father and brother. He later worked in a car manufacturing plant and as a farmer before earning his seminary degree and becoming a pastor. “Pastor Pete” faithfully served as a United Methodist minister in Monroe City, Welton Chapel, Reels Chapel, Hamlin Chapel, Prairie Creek, Pimento, Fletcher Chapel, Ashboro, Centerpoint, West Terre Haute, and Lewis. In that time he shared the love of Christ with hundreds of parishioners. He loved his congregations, and enjoyed his years as their pastor. In his free time, Pete enjoyed gardening, bowling, spending time with his family, and following his beloved Yankees and IU Hoosiers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Willet, a daughter, Darlene Douglas; a son, Peter Lafko, Jr.; his parents, three brothers, Joseph Lefko, Paul Lefko, and Max Lefko, and one sister, Mary Lefko. Pete is survived by his son Robert Lafko and wife Andrea of New Albany, IN; his daughter, Bodonna Hale and her husband Herb of McCordsville; his brother John Lefko and his wife Julie of Florida; his sister Matilda (Tika) Antos and her husband Joseph; 10 grandchildren and several great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Wednesday May 14, 2014 from 4:00 until 8:00 pm in DeBaun Funeral Home, Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Dr. with funeral services on Thursday May 15, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the funeral home with Pastors Aaron Wheaton and Dave Galbraith officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.
