James B. Short passed away on June 28, 2013. He was born on October 21, 1920 to Anna (Weber) and Herman Short in Amherst, Ohio, where he came to love everything about northern Ohio including, and most especially, the New York Central Railroad, the Cleveland Browns, the Cleveland Indians, and THE Ohio State University. He graduated from Amherst High School in 1938 where he was a member of the track team, the orchestra, and the band where he played the trumpet.
In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1945. He was a member of the American Legion Corps where he played the trumpet. In May 27, 1947, he married his beloved wife, Marjorie Bannon in Elyria, Ohio. In 1956, they moved to Hollywood, Florida, with their children, Robert and Ann. Mr. Short worked a variety of jobs while he attended Broward Community College to earn his degree in computer programming. He retired as a systems analyst in Atlantic Richfield (ARCO) in 1985. He was a member of a numerous Lutheran churches including St. Paul’s (Amherst, Ohio), St. Mark’s (Hollywood, Florida), and Fairlawn Lutheran Church (Akron, Ohio) where he sang in the choir and served on the church council.
In 2005, he moved to Terre Haute, Indiana and lived in Westminster Village where he enjoyed playing cards and his numerous friends. He is predeceased by his parents (Anna Weber Short 1964, Herman Short 1956), his wife Marjorie (1996), and brother Ted Robert (1998). He is survived by his son Robert (Pauline) Short of Ocala, Florida, and daughter Ann (Ken) Chirhart of Terre Haute, Indiana; granddaughter Elizabeth (Brian) Smallwood, and stepgrand children Kurtus Chirhart and Angie Maglicic.
Arrangements will be handled by Springhill-De Baun. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Tuesday, July 2, at 11:00 am officiated by Pastor Dana Newhouse and Pastor Don Short. Graveside committal will be at Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst, Ohio, on Friday, July 5. The family requests that donations be given to an organ fund at Trinity Lutheran Church, Terre Haute.
