Robert L. Carter, 86, of Terre Haute, passed away May 5, 2017, in his home. He was born Jan. 26, 1931, to Robert Carter and Ethel Swarz Carter, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Robert was a member of the First Baptist Church in Terre Haute and was a graduate from Temple University in Philadelphia. He was a librarian at the Indiana State University Cunningham Library, beginning his career there in 1963. Robert worked in rare books and special collections until his retirement in 1993. After his retirement he was made librarian emeritus and continued to be involved at the library until his death. In April of 2012 he wrote a memoir about his experiences as the caretaker of the rare books and special collections, some of which were quite rare. His position at Indiana State University took him all over the world, including a visit to the French National Archives in Paris. In his memoir he states, "I learned so much and am extremely grateful for the opportunity." He is survived by a host of friends, and special friends Tom Anderson and Larry Riddle. Memorial services for Robert will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2017, in Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N. 13th St., Terre Haute, Indiana. A visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home on Tuesday. Pastor Bernie Jackson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that contributions be made to the Terre Haute First Baptist Church. Online condolences can be made at:
