JEAN DRAKE JULIAN

Sept. 18, 1923 – Mar. 30, 2015

 

Jean Drake Julian, 91, of Terre Haute (formerly of Fairbanks) went to Heaven to be with Jesus on Monday, March 30, at Union Hospital, with her family by her side.  She was born in Clayton, North Carolina, on Sept. 18, 1923, to Clifford Elliott and Leonora Keeter Hamilton.

 

Jean grew up in Clayton, NC, and graduated from high school and Greensboro Women’s College with a business degree.  She worked as a bookkeeper in several car dealerships in NC.  She met her first husband, Lloyd L. Drake of Fairbanks, IN, in 1944 at a party for the soldiers from Camp Butner Army Base where he was stationed during WWII.  They were married in 1946.

They moved to Fairbanks, Indiana, to the Drake family farm in 1948 where they lived until his death in 1982.  Jean and Lloyd had two daughters and were all active at the Fairbanks Missionary Baptist Church, where she started the Children Worship and worked tirelessly in Bible School and

the Women’s Missionary Society.

 

Jean married Charles Julian of Hymera, IN, in 1984.  They celebrated their 29th anniversary on Dec. 27th, 2014.  They lived on the farm at Fairbanks until 2010 when they moved to West Minster Village in Terre Haute.  They have attended Terre Haute First Baptist Church, where she was a member.

 

Some of Jean’s hobbies and interests included traveling, yardwork, flower arranging, and homemaking.  She was a wonderful cook and loved entertaining. The North Carolina mountains and  the ocean were two of her favorate places to vacation.   She had the gift of hospitality which she exercised wherever she went, always including new people in her plans.  Jean has had lung cancer since August but continued to go to family events including her grandsons’ birthday parties as recently as March 21st.

 

Jean was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, Lloyd L. Drake, who died in 1982.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Julian, daughters Jeanette (Ronald) Riggs, Terre Haute, and Peggy Ann (Greg) McGarvey, Fishers, IN. She is also survived by her sister Ann (Paul) Spack, Palm Harbor, FL, grandchildren Emily (Erick) Gonzalez, Bethany (Dan) Gisel, Christopher McGarvey, and Joshua McGarvey, and great grandsons Adrian and Lucas Gonzalez, two step sons and their wives and families and many neices and nephews and cousins.

 

Funeral services and a celebration of her life at First Baptist Church, 4701 E. Poplar Dr. in Terre Haute will be at 2:00pm on Friday, April 3rd, with the Rev. Bernard Jackson officiating.  Burial will be at the Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan, IN.  The family will accept friends and relatives for visitation from 4:00 to 8:00pm at the DeBaun Springhill Chapel on Thursday, April 2nd.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to VNA/Hospice or Terre Haute First Baptist Church.
