Joseph J. Lugar, 86, of Terre Haute passed away February 11, 2015. He was born on September 10, 1928 to James T. and Madeline (Paul ) Lugar and they have preceded him in death, as well as his brother James T. Lugar. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean (Curts) Lugar on June 12, 2008. Joe and Barbara were married March 23, 1952 and celebrated 56 years together. Joe considered her to be the ideal wife and perfect mate. He is survived by his children Joseph J. Lugar, Jr. (Robyn); and Paula Lugar McCardle (John Volpert); a son-in-law Grand McCardle; his grandchildren Mattheu Lugar (Andrea), Jordan Lugar Fox (Steve), Katie Lugar, Khris McCardle (Nikki), Grand McCardle II (Chrissy), and Clark McCardle; and his great-grandchildren Hayden and Chloe Lugar, Lucy Hudson, Foster McCardle, Jack and Jillian McCardle.
Joe graduated from Ball State University with a degree in chemistry. He used that degree throughout his career, starting at Delco-Remy in Anderson, Indiana. In 1954 the family moved to Weston Paper in St. Marys, Ohio, starting in the chemistry lab and progressing to plant superintendent. In 1970 the family moved to Weston/International Paper in Terre Haute where he also worked as plant superintendent. He was in charge of water/waste treatment control and paper quality control. Upon retiring, he returned to work at the plant and enjoyed every minute. He eventually retired at the age of 70.
He was a Cubmaster for Cub Scouts in St. Marys and was very active in the Methodist Church as Sunday School Superintendent and president of the West Elementary School PTA. In Terre Haute, he and Barbara were active in Bible studies, often holding them at their home. They were active members of the United Methodist Temple.
Joe’s hobbies included fishing, crossword puzzles, and eating at Bob Evans restaurant. The family often enjoyed celebrations of birthdays, anniversaries, and Christmas. Funeral services are Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Temple, 5301 S US 41 in Terre Haute. Visitation is from 9:30 to 10:30. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. If friends so desire, the family has suggested that memorial contributions can be made to the United Methodist Temple.
