Skander Nasser

Skander Nasser, Jr., 87 passed away on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2015 in Terre Haute Regional Hospital following an extended illness with his family by his side. The son of Skander Nasser, Sr. and Hazel Laham Nasser, he was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on May 6th, 1927. He has spent the past 60+ years with the love of his life, Helen Ellis Nasser, whom he married on October 10th, 1954, who survives. Together, they have three children who also survive: Candace “Candy” Nasser & her friend, Reid Zoll, Skander “Sonny” Nasser III & his wife, Tracy Hilton Nasser (Zionsville), and Laura “Lori” Hendrix & her husband, Jack. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Alexandra Hendrix, Megan Nasser, and Colin Nasser. Survivors also include his sister, Betty Nasser Slyby, (Ft. Wayne), his sister-in-law, Joan Mareena Nasser, and his brother-in- law, George Ellis, his nieces, Julie Slyby Blusys, Beth Slyby Welling, William Slyby, Jr., Robert Nasser, Jr., Karen Nasser Uhlhorn, and Nancy Nasser Hawkins, Cousins Zianna Nasser Alley, Beverly Nasser Radez, Dolores Nasser Polifroni, Wanda Nasser, Stu Freigy, & Nancy E. Nasser, in addition to numerous great-nieces, great-nephews. Skander was preceded in death by his parents, his wife’s parents, Charles J. & Wadea Joseph Ellis, his brother, Robert Nasser, Sr., his sister, Maude Ann Nasser, his niece, Brenda Jean Nasser, his brother-in-law, William Slyby, Sr., as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. After graduating from Wiley High School in 1945, Skander pursued an accounting degree from Indiana University for two years. Afterward, he served his country in the United States Army and was deployed to Korea. After his service, he returned to Terre Haute and together with his brother Bob, owned and operated Fi-Blak, an insulation and roofing supply company. They also owned and operated The Bargain Discount. Later, Skander began selling cars in the Wabash Valley at various new car dealers including Vigo Dodge, Inc. and Chrysler-Plymouth of Terre Haute. For approximately 30 years, Skander operated Skander’s Auto Sales, prior to his retirement in 2007. The one thing Skander enjoyed more than work was the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. Skander was a lifetime member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church where he formerly served as a vestryman, a member of the and a 50 year member of the Zorah Shrine Temple, the Scottish Rite, and the Free Masons. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 6th, 2015 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 215 N. 7th Street, Terre Haute, Indiana with the Rev. Drew Downs officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, February 5th, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the church and from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. on Friday also at St. Stephens. Rev. Dn. Eilias Corey and The Rev. John J.K. Nasser will be conducting prayer services on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Stephens Episcopal Church or St. George Orthodox Church of Terre Haute, 1900 S. 4th Street, Terre Haute, Indiana 47807. Pall Bearers are Kaleel M. Ellis III, Michael Thomas Ellis, Jim Hendrix, John Leggett, Dr. Tony K. Nasser, Frank E. Shahadey, Anthony A. Tanoos, Scott Uhlhorn, Michael Koval and Steven Nasser. Honorary Pall Bearers are George Ellis, Kaleel (K.) Ellis, Jr., Stu Freigy, Robert Hillis, John Malooley, Richard J. Alley, William Leham & Thomas Tanoos.
